INDUSTRY SPECIALISATIONS
GOVERNMENT
My early career days saw me serve as Press Secretary to the Rt. Hon. Rex Austin, New Zealand’s Parliamentary Undersecretary (Deputy Minister) of Agriculture & Fisheries, the then-largest portfolio in the New Zealand Cabinet.
This was both preceded and followed by my role as one of several speechwriters to the Governor General, Sir David Beattie, and other key figures in New Zealand public / political life.
My experience with, and insights, into Government in more recent decades are the result of my intensive work in strategy formulation and written productions related to the winning of high-value bids.
My strategy blueprints have frequently acted as deep and detailed briefing papers for C-suite objectives in their meetings with Government procurement agency heads.

Civil Infrastructure, Engineering & Construction
My No. 1 industry specialty of the past two decades. I became an expert bid strategist, bid writer and multiple-times published author in the civil infrastructure / engineering / construction sectors.
With every Tier One player able “to do the job” in this highly competitive sector, compelling communications could only be produced if informed by sharp and insightful strategy (which it was also my role to formulate).
I am particularly recognised for my expertise in producing strategies and strategic written pieces that highlight my clients’ non-price-based Points of Difference – as evidenced by my 2014 ‘Cracking the VfM Code’ specialist book duo.
The ‘VfM Code’ (acronym for “Value for Money”) duo was published to provide infrastructure bidders with guidance on how to succeed in bidding for projects to be conducted using the collaborative contracting methodology. This non-price-competition process has been relied upon by the Australian Federal and State governments to power through massive backlogs of civil infrastructure projects.
Jordan Kelly in Municipal Engineering Australia:
Why Engineers Could be More Compelling than the Average Sales ‘Pro’

Defence
A solid understanding of the unique systems, processes, culture, language and mindset of the Forces is paramount to credibility when communicating with a Defence audience.
By way of example, one of my Defence projects saw me produce the complex and challenging strategy for a major (global) infrastructure player in its effort to turn around an earlier disaster in delivering an ADF (Australian Defence Forces) project, and win back its credibility in the Australian military procurement environment. (The mission was accomplished.)
In a New Zealand example, I directed the strategy inputs and wrote the key pieces for a bid widely recognised throughout the country’s capital, Wellington, as “the biggest game in town” i.e. a contract to revolutionise the telecommunications environment of the NZDF. My Australian client was victorious in a tough battle against the long-time incumbent – this somewhat parochial country’s own homegrown telco giant, along with several other players far longer established in the NZ marketplace than my client.

'Thrilled with Your Contribution' to Winning Defence Bid
“Jordan, thank you so very much.
“Your contribution to our winning bid was greatly appreciated.
"We are all thrilled here at the win with the New Zealand Defence Force.
“Again, our thanks.”

Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity
My first taste of the criticality of representing the value of this sector to the business community, came way back, after 9/11. It was also my introduction to just how many organisations treated pursuit-related communications as mere extensions of their marketing collateral. (Many still do.)
This is an industry at continual risk of competitive devaluation as a result of their leadership failing to understand the many and varied dimensions through which players can, and should, position themselves for meaningful differentiation.
Export
I’ve been published in several industry journals, including (multiple times) in New Zealand Business magazine, for my insights regarding research, strategy and communications in export endeavours.

Her Bid Strategy & Writing Coaching is ‘Practical, Specific, Logical and Detailed’
“Jordan has really given us the ability to think in detail from a client’s point of view when preparing a bid.
"Being International Business Manager and dealing across different continents, I can proudly say that Jordan will help you to upgrade your thinking skills when dealing with every type of bid or client.
“Her coaching is very practical, specific, logical and detailed. Thanks.”

'Strategy for A Very Large & Crucial Bid'
“Alliance Network International recently contracted with Jordan Kelly to assist us with developing an overall strategy and putting together a tender for a very large bid that was crucial to the long-term growth of our business.
“Jordan lead us down a strategic assessment path that formed an essential part of the overall document development process. She guided our executive team through many fascinating and highly productive processes to achieve a truly strategic bid, at every level; a bid that has demonstrated to us that a winning strategy is also able to bring objectivity and reason to a price-focused client.
“The extremely effective techniques used for drilling down into the individual areas of the tender, identifying the perfect strategy to underpin each and then putting it all together in a document that easily flowed from section to section to provide an overall ‘big picture’ is a tribute to both her strategy and writing skills.
“An additional and unexpected benefit was the learning we received through her teaching ability and her valuable knowledge transfer focus throughout this whole process. The bid development processes that Jordan has led us through will be used in our future tenders.”

Facilities Management
My experience with the FM industry has been primarily in the pursuit of growth-critical new contracts (anything from Government to mining camps).
One critical challenge with Facilities Management bids that I have worked with various FM leaders to surmount, is the inherent intangibility of any pre-sales claims.
While business development personnel can table references and hail their resources, unlike infrastructure bidders, for example, there’s no physical structure to point to. No physical product.
Requiring real smarts in both the formulation of strategy and the production of leadership communications, I have worked with several founder-leaders in this space, on pursuits in which they were up against massive, household names with decades of entrenchment in the industry.

‘You Are Obviously A Very Talented Strategic Writer’
“I have received the final copy of my new-business proposal. Just to let you know that I am very happy with this document. I do feel very fortunate that our paths crossed as you have produced something on my behalf which will provide me with a distinct competitive edge.
“You have made this process very simple; you are obviously a very talented strategic writer and your ability to quickly understand my business needs has been very impressive. Thank you also for your quick turnaround time and the very professional service you have provided to me.”

Finance, Banking & Insurance
While these fields are highly specialist, ironically, participants often struggle to communicate meaningful competitive differentiation.
In insurance, many bidders are challenged in the arena of making non-price attributes as important as financial considerations.
In finance, journalists and other intermediary opinion leaders can make or break the perception of an organisation (like a fund manager) in the marketplace, and many enterprises simply don’t know how to change their strategies and messaging sufficiently for the different types of audience.
Hospitality & Corporate Travel
Corporate travel is an intensely competitive arena, with a distinct need for differentiation.
I worked – throughout the course of half a dozen strategic re-positioning and communication re-framing workshops – to completely (and successfully) re-engineer one client enterprise’s entire client value proposition.
Following the implementation of this new positioning and communications strategy, the business went from losing ground to all of its competitors (through its lack of differentiation and confusing marketplace messaging), to a new, more natural and confident competitive position that capitalised on significant strengths it had previously overlooked.
Jordan Kelly in Conventions Industry Magazine:

‘A Very Strategic Letter & An Open Client Door’
“Recently I found myself in a position where I needed to decline an invitation to tender for a large corporation’s travel account.
“Having had a commercial arrangement with the corporation for the past 12 years, I wanted to be in the position of severing the relationship on good terms and keeping the door open for possible future contact.
“Jordan was recommended to me as someone who could assist with compiling suitable correspondence that was beyond the normal ‘thanks but no thanks’ letter.
“Many questions were asked and I had to search the far reaches of my thoughts to be able to give Jordan the answers – at times thinking, ‘What has this got to do with declining a tender offer?’
“However, the end product was a very strategic letter that I could never have put together by myself, and a door that remains very much open (and business that continues to be done) with my most important customer, despite the fact that my company decided not to participate in the RFT.
“Thanks Jordan!”

'Remarkable Talent As A Strategic Writer'
“Jordan Kelly recently provided guidance of extraordinarily high quality to Oracle in the planning and production of an important strategic communication project.
“Her sharpness of mind, objectivity and lateral thinking skills were the perfect resources to help us clarify and convey the competitive strengths of our solution.
“Consolidating the benefits of her facilitation skills is her remarkable talent as a strategic writer. This ensured we effectively communicated the superiority of the Oracle solution.”
Cheenu Srinivasan
Director – Planning & Operations
Oracle Corporation
Information Technology
My passion for this sector has been in working with industry leaders to clinch high-profile Government contracts . . . and I have found that there’s often a great irony at play in these highly-competitive, big-ticket pursuits.
The vendor is falling over itself to show off its technical smarts and advancements. However, within the client’s procurement team are usually several non-IT buffs who are there (a) from other key procurement-interested departments, and (b) to serve the interests of a broader base of stakeholders.
The ability to communicate to, and ultimately work with, both ends of the IT-savvy spectrum is critical.
The leadership of the vendor organisation must lead the way in being actively and continually conscious of this communications imperative.

'No Brief Too Challenging’
“I’ve worked with Jordan for six years on many different projects and many different objectives, and I heartily endorse both her skills and her service levels.
“I am always surprised at the challenging briefs Jordan is able to execute. She can take a market sector or subject area that is completely unfamiliar to her and generate smart, insightful and implementable strategies.
“Her strategy formulation skills are complemented by her skilful facilitation, her first-class writing skills, and by the fact that she delivers on time, every time.”

Professional Services
Here’s one of the fundamental mistakes I observe professional services firms making:
It’s being focused primarily (and often, exclusively) on communicating their own brilliance, before fully demonstrating a comforting depth and detail of understanding of the client’s needs and issues. When that internal focus peppers the firm’s client communication, it risks missing the mark badly.
Professional services leaders need to show themselves as – first and foremost – focused on the client, before banging their drum about their own brilliance. Or a more client-centric competitor will hit the mark with that client.
Public Private Partnerships (PPPs)
The growing pressure on Governments globally to make progress in clearing their (social and economic) public infrastructure backlogs has brought about – in an increasing number of jurisdictions – a willingness to consider Public Private Partnership (PPP) ventures.

‘A Great Jump Start to Bidding PPP Projects’
“I have worked with Jordan to develop a coaching program for companies and individuals wishing to improve their knowledge of the bidding process for PPP projects.

Rail
Many rail and rolling stock manufacturers focus almost solely on heralding the engineering, design, technological, performance, and comfort features of their rolling stock in their client communications.
They place secondary emphasis (if much at all) on understanding the background, and societal, historic and political context of the environment into which they are projecting their communications.
It’s a sector where, more than ever, a company’s senior-most leadership needs to take the initiative to correct this.

Critical Documentation for Overseas Rail Project
“Jordan provided Bombardier Transportation with support to spearhead our tender response strategy for a multi-million dollar overseas rail project.
“For an engineering organisation, more product-focused than ‘market’-focused, Jordan showed the tender team another way to present the tender that was creative, customer-focused, and ensured we stayed on target consistently throughout the tender documentation.
“Jordan has a great feel for a customer’s needs and aspirations, through thorough research of background material to personal contact strategy.
“Jordan demonstrated a keen sense of what mattered to the customer, and her prose in the key frontpiece, the Executive Summary, was appropriate, emphatic and balanced.
“I recommend Jordan to others open to a new way of expression in the difficult world of tendering.”

Transport, Freight & Logistics
The only way to produce compelling marketplace communications in this sector, is through an unparalleled understanding of the customer. No stone must be left unturned in the identification of meaningful differentiation.
One of the most commoditised industries of them all, it’s not good enough to offer loose, unsubstantiated reassurances about service levels, by way of example.
This sector needs its leadership to consistently nurture and communicate a client-centric culture. It’s an industry in which – more than any other – change and effective communication (both external and internal) must come from the very top.

'Assistance with TeleGrid's Strategic Planning Process'
“Thank you for your input and assistance with the development of TeleGrid’s strategic planning process. We found your knowledge and insight into the marketing process interesting and stimulating.

Utilities, Energy, Water & Wastewater Services
Another highly commoditised space, these industries require serious smarts to drill out all points of meaningful differentiation, for their client and marketplace communications.
I’ve led strategy formulation and mission-critical writing endeavours for international specialist consultants and Tier One constructors in dam design and construction, in recycled water plants, and in wastewater treatment plants. In every case, I’ve identified and optimised subject matter experts’ contribution potential to place our team ahead of a highly competitive field.
Early on in my specialisation as a strategic writer and pursuits leader, I worked with TransGrid’s (New South Wales) senior management to review and re-direct their focus and re-shape their communications with key stakeholders, as they moved from a traditional government agency model into new commercial revenue-generating territory.

'Second to None as A Marketing Strategist, Writer & Project Manager'
“As a marketing strategist, writer and project manager, Jordan Kelly is second to none.

Small & Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs)
I have worked with numerous and varied SMEs across the decades . . . . enterprises as varied as gym equipment suppliers, to providers of multiple trades services to Government procurement agencies, to one or two-man start-ups.
The one requirement all have had in common, is their leadership’s need to feel confident in the enterprise’s direction and thus comfortable in their associated communications – both to their marketplace and within their own growing ranks.

'A Well-Defined & Targeted Bid Strategy & Bid Writing Coaching Program'
“Jordan was engaged by Abigroup Contractors to independently review historical bids, suggest document improvements and enhance its pre-bid smarts.
“Through a well-defined and targeted coaching program, skilfully articulated by Jordan, our bid staff gained an invaluable appreciation of the strategic importance of well-researched proposals, in-depth questioning, and forming a deeper understanding of our clients’ value criteria.
“For those companies or individuals serious about the need for their staff to actually think and so improve the ‘non-cost’ and ‘quality elements’ of their relationship contract bid submissions, I recommend Jordan to you.”

'THE RESULTS OF JORDAN’S CV PROCESS & PRODUCTS EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS AGAIN'
“I worked with Jordan in 2012 on a $100m tender and I recruited her again for a separate company’s tender in 2017.
“Jordan used strategic review and comprehensive interviewing techniques to extract key information from our senior nominated staff. In each case, this process provided a concise Curriculum Vitae script tailored specifically to the tender. It was thanks to these scripts that our people were best represented as the experienced face of the company, and as such were shortlisted in an extremely specialised field.
“The process Jordan employed was very involved, and the resulting work and subsequent results exceeded expectations.”

JK Bid Critiquing 'Breaks Insular Group-Think'
“In the high stakes, ultra-competitive infrastructure services market, true insight and strategic excellence are invaluable in achieving success.
“Jordan practices what she preaches, and has the ability to provide an independent and insightful critique of the kind that can break the insular group-think that major bid teams can self-create.

'Her Bid Strategy Coaching Changed the Whole Way We Approach Clients'
“Our weekend workshop by Jordan Kelly helped me see the bid evaluation process from the client’s perspective. I now cringe when I look back on some of the bids and client communications I have sent in the past. Her unique perspective was exactly what I was looking for, for our sales and marketing team and all the participants were very impressed with both the content and the delivery.
“I can honestly say that the concepts that Jordan uses have already become part of the way we work and interact with our clients, not only in the realm of a bid, but also in day-to-day interactions. Whilst not for the faint-hearted, Jordan’s workshop lead us through the bid strategy formulation process in a way which completely changed the way we approach our clients. She does this, not by formulas or templates, but by a complete paradigm shift, which truly changes ingrained behaviours.
“Thanks, Jordan, for what should become a pivotal moment in the history of our company.

'Jordan Kelly's is the Very Best Brain You Could Hire'
“If you require a strategic thinker who can apply a laser sharp and incisive line of questioning, who can cut through jargon and clutter like a knife, and who can rapidly pull all the elements of the ‘big picture’ into one cohesive strategy, then Jordan Kelly’s is the very best brain you could hire.
“Jordan has a distinctive, fresh, smart style that greatly focuses the thought processes of an organisation’s own business development team. I for one have found hers to be a far more productive approach than the standard ‘methodologies’ employed by so many consultants.

“We are a small, tight-knit team, comprising everything from our Executive PA, to our Construction and Project Managers, our Estimators, our Business Development Manager, and myself, North Queensland Manager.
“What has been particularly gratifying and valuable about her involvement with our team, is that, while she lead us, taught us, and co-managed our activities with us, she was at the same time one of us. She was an absolutely integral member of our team.
“Although her mandate was to work with us on the production of our RFP responses, every aspect of her work with us actually became a coaching session and a learning experience in its own right. The residual value of her bid work with us has been immense in that regard. “I first worked with Jordan when I was with a small technically-oriented company bidding for a major Government project. She quickly realised that we lacked the ‘big picture’ on how to present ourselves and our proposal to the many and varied stakeholders who would contribute to the final decision.
